Comprehensive Dentistry on Los Angeles, Where Every Case Is Planned by the Dentist Who Treats It

── What We Do

Dental Services We Offer

We take a whole-body approach to dentistry, where your mouth, how you sleep, and how you feel every day are all connected. Located on Museum Row in the heart of Los Angeles, our practice offers everything from cleanings and fillings to jaw pain treatment, full mouth reconstruction, and implants placed start to finish in one office. Dr. Shelyan sees one patient at a time with extra time built into every appointment, checks the muscles and the bite alongside the teeth, and shows you what he is seeing while he is seeing it. Whether you keep needing repairs and want someone to look at why, have been putting off a visit for years, or simply want to understand your own mouth for once, we would love to be that place.

What Our Patients Are Saying

── Meet your dentist

Meet Dr. Mehrshad Shelyan

Dr. Shelyan came to the United States as an immigrant, and the four-year degree ahead of him took ten years instead. He worked through every one of them to support himself, starting with English and math classes before he could move into the sciences at all. He completed his bachelor's degree in neuroscience at UCLA, earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery at New York University, and spent his first two years out of school in corporate and high-end practices in Los Angeles before deciding he wanted to build something of his own.

He became a dentist because of his own dentist. He had been living with pain nearly every day, and the man who finally ended it showed him that dentistry is equal parts science and craft. In late 2007, in the middle of a recession, he bought a practice from a periodontist that came with equipment, a lease, and no patients at all, and built Forever Smile from there. That history is why he treats the whole patient rather than the single tooth in front of him, checking the gums, the bite, how the jaw moves, the muscles in the head and face, and the signs of grinding and sleep trouble that most people never notice.

Dr. Shelyan is the only dentist at Forever Smile, and his policy is one patient at a time with extra time built in, especially for anyone who has had a bad experience somewhere else. He will show you what he is looking at while he is looking at it, because he believes you cannot make a good decision about your own mouth if nobody has explained it to you. He still describes the work itself as the most meditative part of his day. He is certified by the Dental Organization of Conscious Sedation and permitted by the California Dental Board to provide sedation dentistry, and he is a member of the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, the Los Angeles Dental Society, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and the Academy of General Dentistry.

Questions Patients Ask Us

What happens at my first visit?

Your first visit starts with a full-mouth X-ray and a comprehensive exam covering your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw, and it runs about an hour. Dr. Shelyan checks the muscles in your head and face, how your jaw moves, and the early signs of grinding, and he shows you what he is seeing as he goes. Afterward our front office team sits down with you to go over the findings and your insurance, and if the schedule allows we can often fit a cleaning into the same visit.

My night guard is not helping my jaw pain. What else can be done?

A night guard protects your teeth from grinding, but it does not stop the grinding or treat the muscle doing it, which is why jaw pain and morning headaches often continue while you wear one. EMFACE® works directly on that muscle using gentle heat and muscle stimulation to calm the spasm and re-teach it to stop overworking. There are no injections, no surgery, and no jaw manipulation, and a full course is six sessions over three to six weeks.

What is EMFACE, and is it covered by insurance?

EMFACE® is a non-invasive treatment that works on the facial muscles, with one mode for jaw tension and grinding and a second mode for facial aesthetics that stimulates your own collagen and elastin. Because it is an elective, specialty treatment, it is not typically covered by standard dental insurance. Flexible financing is available, and our team will walk you through the exact investment during your consultation.

Do you accept my dental insurance?

We accept all PPO plans. We do not accept HMOs, Medicaid, or Medicare. If you have a PPO, our team verifies your specific benefits before your appointment so you are not guessing about cost when you arrive.

Do you offer payment plans if I need a lot of work?

Yes. We offer in-house payment plans that spread treatment across several visits, and we work with CareCredit, Cherry, and Sunbit for outside financing. Cherry and Sunbit do not require a hard credit pull, which many patients prefer.

It has been years since I saw a dentist. Do you offer sedation?

Yes, and there is no lecture waiting for you here. Oral conscious sedation using pills rather than an IV is available for anxious patients and longer procedures, and Dr. Shelyan is certified by the Dental Organization of Conscious Sedation and permitted by the California Dental Board to provide it. Many patients who assume they will need sedation for everything find that once they understand the plan, they do not need it for every visit. Your first visit can be an exam and X-rays only, with no instruments and nothing decided until you are ready.

Where is Forever Smile Dental Care located?

We are at 5757 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 350, Los Angeles, CA 90036, inside the SAG-AFTRA building on Museum Row, near the museums on Wilshire and the La Brea Tar Pits. There is a parking structure in the building and street parking on both sides, though we do not validate. Take the elevator to the third floor and look for Suite 350, and there is a directory in the lobby if you need it. We are open Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, and you can reach us at 323-634-9004.

Ready to Understand What Is Actually Going On?
